Progression within the game construct is based on space XP. Taking missions from your NPC trainer will help in obtaining that XP. Your NPC trainers operate on storylines. When you have completed a leg of the storyline (defeat enemy patrols, combat escorts, etc) but do not have enough XP to train in the next level, then the trainer will offer duty missions.

Two of the most common are enemy patrols and escort missions. These missions are open ended and will repeat themselves with increased intensity until you decide to land, or are killed, ending the mission. When you have enough XP, the trainer will offer you training, or send you on a unique storyline mission. You must complete this mission in order to train in the next skill.

When you are on the mission, you will have mission objectives. You must meet those objectives or you will fail the mission and have to start over again.

Top Edit

1. Patrol missions

These consist of flying to a waypoint in a system, and then getting attacked by a group of enemy ships. Mission targets are bracketed in red through your windscreen, and appear on radar with yellow brackets around them.

You must deal with these (kill, disable, or capture depending on the mission) in order to progress. Follow Rebel Command (system messages) until given the mission complete notice. Be careful, once the mission is over, there may be an added mission that must be taken on before you can land. This will usually appear within 10 seconds of the mission complete notice, and typically only happens at the higher levels.

2. Capture/Rescue Missions

These will require you to travel to a given waypoint in a system and then identify a specific mission target to disable.(Read the Intermediate Combat tactics for disabling procedures) . Make sure you target a vital component on the enemy ship by pressing the configured "key" to target those components.

When the ship is disabled, do not finish it off. You will need to dock with it. You may want to clear the area of other enemy ships before docking with the target.

You will be vulnerable in this process. When the ship is captured or you have obtained the cargo you needed, the computer will automatically undock and give you the next phase of the mission. If the mission is complete, return home.

3. Escort Missions

These require you to link up at a waypoint with your escort target, and escort it to a jump point. During the escort, you will be attacked. Defend your escort at all costs. When the escort jumps into hyperspace, the mission is complete.
